Thunderstorm Preparedness

9/7/2023 (Permalink)

Tree fallen on a house A thunderstorm toppled a tree on this house.

Each year, there are close to 100,000 thunderstorms across the nation. These frequent weather events can be scary, bringing strong winds, lightning, hail, and intense rain, all of which can cause personal danger and property damage.

Thunderstorms and tornadoes are not uncommon, even in NJ, especially in the spring and summer months. We must always be prepared for any weather that may come our way.

Your Severe Weather Communication Strategy

Understanding weather terms, particularly the differences between a watch and a warning is the first step in keeping your family safe. By knowing when to wait and when to go, you can clearly communicate with your household and activate the weather plan you have created together.

It is a good idea to have several ways to receive warnings from weather officials. Your cell phone and a weather radio from the NOAA are good tools to have ready when a storm is rolling in.

Create a designated safe area in your house (typically a bathroom or basement) and ensure that everyone in your family knows where it is. A communication plan for your household is also recommended to ensure that everyone can check in during and after a storm. Be sure this plan includes a way for anyone who may not be home at the time of the event to check in so that all can be accounted for.  Remember to consider pets.  My dog instinctively runs into the bathroom when she hears thunder.

Your Severe Weather Emergency Kit

An emergency kit can be prepared ahead of time and updated throughout the year. It should contain enough water and food for each member of your family to sustain them through 72 hours. First-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and any comfort items that can aid in the calming of your household should also be in the kit.  While you likely won’t stock the emergency kit with medication you should have some reminders with the kit to prompt you to gather essential medication prior to any evacuation.

Your Severe Weather Aftermath Checklist

Time matters after a storm, so it is essential to take quick action to mitigate losses. You should have a plan in place before a storm strikes so that you can act quickly and get your family to safety. As soon as you can, you should walk your property and assess any damage.

As you walk the property, pay special attention to your roof, windows, and doors to ensure they are still properly sealed and note any water damage that may have occurred.

If your home is damaged, call us at SERVPRO TEAM MAJESKI. We are available 24/7 and can offer you peace of mind after the storm as we make it, “Like it never even happened.”

  1. Create an Emergency Plan: Develop a detailed plan that includes evacuation routes, designated meeting points, and emergency contacts. Share this plan with your family or employees.

  2. Secure Your Property: Inspect your property for vulnerable areas, such as loose roof shingles or weak tree branches, and address them promptly. Trim trees and secure outdoor furniture and equipment to prevent damage during strong winds.

  3. Safeguard Important Documents: Store important documents, such as insurance policies, identification papers, and medical records, in a waterproof and fireproof container. Consider making digital copies as well.

  4. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble a well-stocked emergency kit that includes essentials like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and a portable phone charger. Keep it easily accessible in case of power outages or evacuation.

  5. Backup Your Data: Regularly backup important data, such as documents, photos, and videos, on an external hard drive or in the cloud. This will ensure you don't lose valuable information in the event of a storm-related computer or device damage.

  6. Stay Informed: Stay updated on weather forecasts and warnings through reliable sources. Have a battery-powered radio or a smartphone with emergency alerts enabled to receive timely information.

  7. Contact SERVPRO® for Storm Restoration: In case your property sustains storm damage, rely on SERVPRO's expertise. Our team provides emergency board-up services, water damage restoration, debris cleanup, and structural repairs.

We are stocking up for the upcoming cold weather in case we loose power.

Wow we are into mid-January and the weather has been very mild so far.  But from what reports are saying we should be getting back into the bundling back up days.  With the cold coming it’s that time to make sure you are prepared.  We often forget about the little things that are needed during this time.  For example, if you are traveling during the winter you should carry a blanket in your car in case you break down and have to wait for someone to come and get you or make sure if a storm is coming have plenty of water on hand in the house in case the power goes out.  Ensure your vehicle have plenty of gas so you don’t run out in the middle of a storm and get stuck.

Storm Damage in Colts Neck, NJ

12/12/2019 (Permalink)

The storm drain was clogged and backed up into the basement of this home. We had to remove drywall and carpeting.

During the fall storm season, we seem to have lots of wind included and this could cause issues because of leaves being blown around.  If you don’t remove leaves from your gutters or outside drainage areas this could cause flooding/backups into your home or business.  It is recommended that leaves be removed from these areas once most of the leaves have fallen to the ground.  Yes, it may be a hassle or something you don’t feel like doing but in the long run it will save you money by not having to pay for water mitigation on your home.  If you don’t feel like doing it hire a landscape company to come out and do a fall cleanup, it might cost up front, but it will be cheaper then paying for mitigation.  SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls is here if you are in need of water mitigation from flooding, we can be contacted at 732-536-7555.

2018 Hurricane Names

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

Always Be Prepared For Storms

Every Hurricane season the National Hurricane Center releases a list of names, in alphabetical order, to be used for hurricanes and tropical storms.

Even though this year’s list of names don’t sound very fierce, please always adhere to the warnings your weather stations and local governments put out.  Make sure you are always prepared for these storms.  The storm may not hit your area directly but there could be residual damages.

Here are the names for the Atlantic Hurricane Season of 2018:

Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helene, Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sara, Tony, Valerie, and William.

There are six lists, so a name can recur once every six years, so these names cannot be used again until 2024. When a hurricane is especially memorable or devastating, that name is retired, and another hurricane name replaces it.

If you are in need of storm damage cleanup give SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls a call at 732-536-7555.

Ways to melt Ice and Snow

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

Iced Covered Parking Lot in Marlboro, NJ.

De-icing methods have been used a lot in the last few weeks.  There are several different types of methods that can be used.

  • Most common is Sodium Chloride know as rock salt. It can damage concrete, metal and pollute river, lakes and streams so this is probably the least likely one you would want to use.
  • Calcium Chloride comes in round pellets and if your hands are wet during application they can become irritated.
  • One of the better choices is Potassium Chloride and it is not a skin irritant and doesn’t harm vegetation.
  • New to the group is Magnesium Chloride and it will melt ice and snow till -13F. This is also less damaging to concrete and vegetation.

Remember to always read the manufacturer’s safety directions and guidelines for these products.  These products also can be messy so if you feel like not cleaning up after give us a call, 732-546-7555 SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls.

Hurricane And Winter Storm Readiness

12/22/2017 (Permalink)

Frozen Water Pipe Damage

Being prepared for a storm is something people don’t think about till it happens to them.  Over the last several years we have seen devastating storms hit the US, such as Super Storm Sandy hitting the North East, Hurricane Harvey hitting Middle Texas Coast and Hurricane Irma devastating Puerto Rico and Florida which means we should start preparing beforehand.  Hurricanes are not the only type storms to be prepared for we have winter storms to worry about too.

The Red Cross tells us the most important items need to get through a storm are:

  • Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home).
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible).
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
  • Multi-purpose tool
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies).
  • Cell phone with chargers
  • Family and emergency contact information
  • Extra cash
  • Emergency blanket
  • Map(s) of the area

If after the storm you need restoration services SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls is here to help, give us a call at 732-536-7555.

Winter Storms Are Coming If We Like It Or Not

Stow Storm In Toms River, NJ

Storm

We are coming upon the season of winter storms.  Lots of snow, sleet, ice and cold temperatures are about to engulf us.  SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls would like to make sure that you know if you are affected by any storm damage we are here to help.  Some of the damages we deal with in the winter are Ice Dams (An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas), frozen pipes (It has to do with pressure inside the pipes. When water freezes, its molecules crystallize into an open hexagonal form, which takes up more space than when the molecules are in their liquid form — that is, the water molecules expand as they freeze. As the ice expands, it pushes water toward the closed faucet.) and even thawing snow (which causes the ground to become too saturated and starts to leak into the your basement).   We hope that you don’t encounter any of this but if you do please give us a call to help you get you home back to “Like It Never Even Happened), 732-536-7555.

Snow Storm in Colts Neck, NJ Causing Roof/Water Damage

It’s almost that time again in the Northeast.  Mother Nature has been very mild on us the last few years, so we may have forgotten about being storm prepared.

Here are a few before, during and after the storm tips.

  2. Determine your greatest rick potential: loss of heat, frozen pipes and/or loss of success due to snow & ice.
  3. Clean & inspect all heating equipment.

During:

  1. Keep informed by local news & weather channels for any storm related issues.
  2. Keep driveways, walkways & doorways clear of snow & ice.
  3. Have a list of names & phone numbers for pertinent people in case of emergency i.e. disaster recovery provider, heating contractor etc.

After:

  1. Keep all employees informed about office closing or hours of operation changes.
  2. Clear snow away safely to avoid flooding & icing.
  3. Check the building for any damages.

Contamination in Flood Waters

10/27/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Flooding in Forked River, NJ

As we recently witnessed in Texas and Florida two devastating hurricanes past through the area.  Most everyone is concerned about the property damage and loss of lives.  These are two very important subjects of storm damage but there is also one more that most don’t think of and that is contamination in the flood waters.

Hurricanes can cause oceans, bays, rivers and other water sources to rise and flood areas.  When these waters rise they come in contact with such contaminants such as oil, gasoline, sewer drain water and many more.  Once this happens the water becomes contaminated (Category 3 water).  If Cat 3 water has come in contact with your home there may be many items affected.

Your contents in your home will need to be removed and discarded.  Drywall has to be removed to where the water line has come to.  Spraying an anti-microbial, removing contaminated items and drying out the structure will stop the growth of mold and stop the contamination to the structure of the building.

SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls has seen our share of storms and we are prepared to help you out in your time of need so it takes some of the pressure off of you.  We deal with the insurance companies if you have coverage so you don’t have to.  Storms don’t run on a time schedule so that’s why we are here 24/7 to help you out, please call us at 732-536-7555 or visit our website at www.SERVPROmarlborotintonfall.com

Don’t Get Left in the Cold with Ice Dam Damage

10/26/2017 (Permalink)

Ice Dam Damage in Oakhust, NJ

We are coming upon the season for Ice Dam Damage.  For those of you that don’t know what an Ice Dam is here is some insight on them.  An Ice Dam is caused when a ridge of ice is formed on the edge of the roof and prevents melting snow/water from draining off the roof.  Then the water backs up behind the dam and leaks into the home and possible causing damage to the walls, ceiling, insulation or flooring.  The best way to prevent Ice Dams from forming is to make sure the roof is cleared of snow after a storm by using a rake or broom.  You can also make sure that your gutters are clear and allowing water to pass through them.  SERVPRO of Marlboro/Tinton Falls can deal with any damage an Ice Dam has caused to your home.  We can be reached at 732-536-7555 or visit our website @ www.SERVPROmarlborotintonfalls.com.
